Former NFL quarterback Will Grier is joining the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff as an offensive assistant, according to a source cited by ESPN's Todd Archer. Adam Schefter amplified the report.
Grier, 31, officially retired from playing on July 15 after signing with the Carolina Panthers prior to training camp. The Panthers placed him on the reserve/retired list shortly after.
This move was almost a reality earlier in the offseason. After spending the 2024 season on Dallas' practice squad, the Cowboys offered Grier a spot on Brian Schottenheimer's coaching staff. Grier came close to accepting before Carolina came calling with a roster opportunity. Once that door closed, he circled back to Dallas.
Grier had two separate two-year stints with the Cowboys (2021-2022 and 2024-2025) and is considered a close confidant of Dak Prescott, which should make the transition into a coaching role a natural fit.
Grier was a third-round pick (100th overall) by the Panthers in the 2019 NFL Draft out of West Virginia. He appeared in two regular season games that year and never made another regular season appearance. Over a seven-year career he passed through six teams: the Panthers, Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, and Philadelphia Eagles.
There are no direct fantasy football implications here. This is purely a coaching staff transaction with no effect on the Cowboys' quarterback depth chart or any skill position group. The only minor context worth noting is that Prescott now has a trusted ally in his corner as a coaching assistant.
