San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan sustained serious injuries in a car accident during his summer break in mid-July 2026, ESPN's Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner reported on July 25 -- the same day veterans reported to the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara.

Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, and his hand, and needed more than 40 stitches in his face. The tweet from Schefter was truncated, so the full list of injuries may be longer than what has been confirmed so far.

He is expected to be limited during camp but is not expected to miss it entirely. There are no reports of any coordinator or assistant taking on elevated authority as a result of his condition.
