Jahmyr Gibbs is now the NFL's highest-paid running back
Jahmyr Gibbs, RB for the Detroit Lions, agreed to a 3-year, $67.5 million extension that can reach $75.75 million with incentives, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The contract includes $51.5 million guaranteed and pushes Gibbs past Bijan Robinson (Atlanta Falcons) as the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
Gibbs had been away from full team practices during training camp negotiations. With the deal done, he is expected to return to the practice field immediately.
What this means for his fantasy value
There is no ambiguity about the depth chart. Detroit just paid Gibbs like a franchise centerpiece, and the guaranteed money backs that up. He handles rushing work and catches passes out of the backfield, giving him a high floor in PPR formats.
David Montgomery remains in the backfield on his own 2-year, $18.25 million extension. Montgomery is the handcuff worth rostering in deeper leagues, but Gibbs owns the featured role.
The main thing to track now is how quickly Gibbs ramps up after missing practice reps. Monitor his preseason workload and snap share before locking in your Week 1 lineup. Nothing in the research suggests a longer-term concern, but conditioning after a holdout is always worth watching early in camp.
Where Gibbs sits on your roster
This contract removes the last reason to be cautious about Gibbs as a long-term dynasty asset. In redraft leagues, he is a first-round pick. The Lions built their offense around him, and the money confirms it.
