Jonathan Taylor extension locks him in as the Colts' workhorse
Jonathan Taylor, RB for the Indianapolis Colts, has officially signed a two-year, $44 million contract extension, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The contract can reach $47 million in incentives, and Taylor is guaranteed $39 million. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it is the largest third contract for a running back in NFL history.
Taylor, 27, was entering the final year of his deal heading into 2026. This extension removes any contract uncertainty and keeps him in Indianapolis through at least the 2027 season.
The signing comes days after Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson set the market at $22.75 million per year. Taylor now sits second among running backs in average annual value.
What his 2025 performance showed
Taylor closed the 2025 season on a tear, surpassing 100 rushing yards in each of his final four games. He finished with 580 yards and six touchdowns on 117 carries over that stretch and appeared in 17 games for just the second time in his career.
He has improved his fantasy points per game in each of the past three seasons.
Fantasy impact of the Jonathan Taylor extension
This is straightforward for fantasy managers. Taylor is the undisputed lead back in a Colts backfield that also includes DJ Giddens, Seth McGowan, and Roydell Williams. No depth chart threat is close to threatening his workload.
The Colts have talked about reducing his touches to keep him fresh in year seven, but even a slightly lighter load still projects as a high-floor RB1. He is a firm top-five pick in both redraft and dynasty formats.
The one real variable is quarterback Daniel Jones, who is coming off an Achilles injury. How effective Jones is in 2026 will shape how much the Colts can threaten defenses through the air, which in turn affects how much eight-man boxes Taylor sees.
