Jahmyr Gibbs extension: 3 years, $67.5M with Lions

Jahmyr Gibbs extension locks him in as Lions' lead back

Jahmyr Gibbs, RB for the Detroit Lions, agreed to a 3-year, $67.5 million extension that makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. The deal can reach $75.75 million with incentives and includes $51.5 million guaranteed, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. It kicks in starting in 2028 and runs through the 2030 season.

The contract tops the 3-year, $66.75 million extension Atlanta Falcons RB Bijan Robinson signed just days earlier.

What ended the holdout

Gibbs had been conducting a hold-in at Lions training camp, present in the building but not practicing while he sought a new deal. He also dealt with a minor back issue that came up during the team's conditioning test. Head coach Dan Campbell described it as not severe. Gibbs returned to practice once the extension was finalized.

Does the Lions' two-back system limit his fantasy ceiling?

The Lions run a two-back system. RB David Montgomery handles goal-line and power work, while Gibbs is the explosive, pass-catching back who sees the bulk of the receiving work and open-field touches. That split is not changing. Montgomery is also on an extension, so the split is baked in.

For PPR formats, that is a feature. Gibbs' pass-catching role and big-play upside are exactly what made him the highest-paid back in the league. He also operates behind one of the best offensive lines in football, with Jared Goff (4 years, $212 million extension) leading the offense.

What this means for your roster

The holdout risk is gone. The back issue was minor and he is back on the field. Gibbs is firmly the Lions' featured back through the foreseeable future. If you were holding off on committing to him in dynasty or redraft because of contract uncertainty, that reason no longer exists.
