Cyrus Allen injury puts his Chiefs WR3 candidacy on hold

Cyrus Allen, rookie WR for the Kansas City Chiefs, is being evaluated for a lower leg injury at training camp, per Adam Schefter. The news comes after Allen had been the most impressive player through the first three days of camp.

Allen, a fifth-round pick (176th overall) out of Cincinnati in the 2026 NFL Draft, opened camp on Day 1 by hauling in a leaping touchdown at the back of the end zone over two defenders in 7-on-7 drills. By Day 3, his first-team reps with Patrick Mahomes had grown each day, and his catches were drawing audible crowd reactions. One highlight: a low catch on a crossing route against tight coverage from nickel CB Chris Roland-Wallace.

Head coach Andy Reid spent one-on-one time with Allen between reps and said Wednesday: "Cyrus had a good day today with him. I think Pat's got some trust there. We've got a long way to go, but we've just got to keep growing."

Where Allen fits on the depth chart

The Chiefs WR3 spot is genuinely open, and Allen had been the frontrunner before this evaluation. Rashee Rice is dealing with ongoing off-field issues. Xavier Worthy, who had a disappointing 2025 season, is also being evaluated at camp, for a shoulder injury. Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Royals, who fumbled during team drills, are also in the mix.

Mahomes is working back from an ACL injury suffered in 2025 and had been looking Allen's way consistently during his ramp-up. That early chemistry now has an asterisk until the injury evaluation clears.

What it means for your roster

Allen caught 51 passes for 674 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2025 at Cincinnati, third in the country and a program single-season record. The WR3 role on a Patrick Mahomes offense carries real target share upside, especially with Travis Kelce in the later stages of his career.

No severity has been reported yet. In dynasty formats, Allen is still worth holding given the upside, but avoid adding him at a premium until there is clarity on the injury. In redraft, do not spend meaningful capital until both his health and the depth chart settle.
