McVay: No Answer Yet on Aaron Donald Return
Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed this week that retired defensive tackle Aaron Donald is working through a "very strict" personal process to decide whether he wants to play again, but McVay made clear he has no idea how it ends.
"But if that is something that he wants to do, we are going to try to be able to make that happen," McVay said. "But I genuinely do not have an answer on whether he is or isn't."
Donald, 35, retired in March 2024 after 10 seasons with the Rams. He leaves with 111 career sacks, 10 Pro Bowl selections, 8 first-team All-Pro honors, and 3 AP Defensive Player of the Year awards. He is widely considered a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
What Triggered the Comeback Talk
The speculation picked up in June 2026 when the Rams acquired edge rusher Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns in a blockbuster trade. Garrett set the NFL single-season sack record with 23 in 2025 and is coming off his second AP Defensive Player of the Year award. Shortly after the deal, Donald texted Pat McAfee and said the move "for sure got him thinking" about returning. Rams GM Les Snead also acknowledged that Donald was seriously considering a comeback for the first time since retiring.
What Donald Has Been Doing
Donald has been putting in real work. TMZ obtained video around July 10-11 of him working out at the Rams facility in Woodland Hills, doing ladder drills, medicine ball throws, and agility work in pads for roughly an hour. The team described his approach as a trial method -- he wanted to see how his body and mind responded to being back in pads on the field before committing to anything.
Donald was also spotted on the sideline at Rams training camp as an observer after camp opened July 25. NFL Network reporters suggested the vibe leaned toward him returning, with one framing the only open question as when, not if. But Adam Schefter reported around July 20-21 that the decision does not appear close and Donald will not commit until he is fully convinced he can do it at the level he expects of himself.
The Rams have not pressured him. McVay's comments reinforce that posture -- it is Donald's call, and the team is ready to move when he makes it.
Contractual Wrinkle
Because Donald retired before his prior contract expired, the Rams could owe him up to $30 million in dead money if he unretires. The two sides would need to negotiate new contract terms before anything is official.
Fantasy Outlook
Donald is an IDP-only asset. He does not affect standard skill-position fantasy formats. In IDP leagues, multiple analysts have projected a returning Donald as the top fantasy DT. A Donald and Garrett pairing on the defensive line would also boost the Rams D/ST fantasy value.
There is no official timeline. Donald could join during camp, before the regular season, or potentially mid-season. Right now, the decision is entirely in his hands and nothing is done.
