Mike Evans quad strain surfaces at 49ers training camp

Mike Evans, WR, San Francisco 49ers, is sitting out Monday's practice with a quad strain, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. No timetable has been provided.

The timing is worth noting. Evans, who turns 33 in August, is entering his first season with San Francisco after 12 years in Tampa Bay. He was limited to just eight games in 2025 due to hamstring and collarbone injuries plus a concussion. An anonymous executive predicted before camp that Evans would miss four to six games in 2026. A quad issue in the opening week of camp is not the start anyone wanted.

The good news is that Evans had been impressive before going down. He worked consistently with quarterback Brock Purdy through OTAs and the first several days of camp, including a deep completion down the left sideline during 11-on-11 work. George Kittle noted Evans caught three to five touchdowns during a red-zone OTA period.

What this means for the 49ers receiver room

Evans is the unquestioned WR1 on this depth chart. The 49ers adjusted their practice schedule this offseason specifically to reduce wear on veterans like Evans, which tells you how much they are managing his workload even before the regular season.

With Evans out Monday, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins, and Will Pauling are the next options in the rotation. None of those names moves the needle in redraft unless Evans misses significant time.

Rookie WR De'Zhaun Stribling is also not practicing today with a hamstring issue, so the 49ers receiver room is a little thin at the moment.

Should you be worried in fantasy?

A quad strain in late July is not a four-alarm situation on its own. The lack of a timetable warrants watching, but "not practicing" during the first week of camp is different from missing regular-season games. If Evans is still sidelined a week from now, that changes the calculus.

For now, hold your Evans shares. If he misses practice through the end of next week, Robinson becomes a waiver wire name worth stashing in deeper leagues.
