Gerald Alexander Vikings suspension covers early training camp

Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander will miss the first three weeks of training camp after the team suspended him without pay through August 13. The suspension follows his April 26 arrest for drunken driving in Edina, Minnesota and his subsequent guilty plea.

According to ESPN's Kevin Seifert, court documents show an Edina police officer responded to a welfare check at 4:01 a.m. and found Alexander passed out at the wheel in the middle of an intersection. Officers struggled to wake him, and when he did regain consciousness he was mumbling incoherently. A field sobriety test was cut short because his balance was too poor to complete safely.

On July 16, Alexander pleaded guilty to a third-degree DWI after refusing a chemical test. He agreed to perform community service.

What this means for the Vikings secondary

Alexander, who was hired this past February as the team's defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, is expected to return once the suspension ends. The Vikings said they stayed in contact with the NFL while waiting for the legal process to play out and view the three-week suspension as appropriate.

For fantasy purposes, the impact is indirect. Alexander's absence during the opening portion of camp means less continuity in schematic installation for the Vikings secondary. If you roster a Vikings corner or safety, watch for any changes in how those players are deployed once he returns August 13 and full practices resume. Nothing here changes a roster move today, but it is worth monitoring as depth chart clarity develops through the preseason.
