Mia Bieniemy, 57, wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot Sunday night at the family's home on Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia. Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies responded around 7:30 p.m. and found her suffering multiple gunshot wounds inside the residence. She is hospitalized in stable condition, per a source cited by ESPN.
CBS NFL analyst and former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was arrested Thursday evening in Milwaukee on a first-offense OWI charge and released the same night. Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, the couple's son, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond, per the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office. The charges were first reported by Adam Schefter and Nate Taylor.
The Chiefs released a statement saying they are "aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family" but declined to provide further details.
No reports indicate Eric Bieniemy is stepping away from his coaching duties. This is his second stint as Chiefs offensive coordinator after holding the post from 2018 through 2022, with a one-year stop as Washington Commanders OC in 2023 in between.
If Bieniemy were to take a leave of absence, the Chiefs' offensive play-calling would be in question, which would create uncertainty around Patrick Mahomes QB, the wide receiver group, and Kansas City's running backs heading into the season.
