C.J. Gardner-Johnson lower calf strain: what we know
Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson (S, Buffalo Bills) suffered a lower calf strain during Saturday's training camp practice and was carted to the locker room, according to Adam Schefter. Tests confirmed the diagnosis, which is a relief compared to what the scene initially looked like.
Gardner-Johnson went down during an 11-on-11 period on a non-contact play. Trainers evaluated his lower right leg and foot on the field. He spent about five minutes in the medical tent before being carted off unable to put weight on his right side. Bills GM Brandon Beane came out to check on him shortly before he was taken in.
Offensive tackle Dion Dawkins was one of the first teammates to check on Gardner-Johnson and suggested there were some early positive signs, which aligns with the calf strain diagnosis rather than a structural injury.
How long will he be out?
No official timetable has been given. A lower calf strain in early August can range from a couple of weeks to a month or more depending on severity. If the Bills treat this conservatively through the preseason, there is a real question whether he is ready for Week 1.
For context, cornerback Max Hairston suffered a training camp injury last summer and missed the first six games of the 2025 season before returning. Gardner-Johnson also has injury history to factor in, including a torn pectoral muscle in 2023 that cost him 14 games with the Detroit Lions.
Gardner-Johnson signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with Buffalo this offseason. This is his first season with the Bills after stints with the Saints, Eagles, Lions, Texans, and Bears.
Fantasy and IDP impact
Gardner-Johnson has minimal redraft value but matters in IDP leagues where he was a potential starter. With him sidelined, Damar Hamlin, Geno Stone, Jalon Kilgore, and nickelback Jordan Hancock are the names to watch for defensive snaps in Buffalo's secondary.
If you have Gardner-Johnson rostered in an IDP format, monitor the next few days for an official timetable before committing a roster spot. If he misses significant time, Hamlin and Stone are the most likely candidates to absorb his snaps.
