Belichick Says UNC Program Culture Is Much Higher Than a Year Ago Heading Into Year 2
Belichick Confident UNC Has Turned a Corner
Bill Belichick sat down with ESPN's Pete Thamel and made clear he believes the Tar Heels are in a significantly better spot heading into his second season in Chapel Hill.
"Overall as a football team, our culture, our program, our ability to operate as a team is much higher than it was a year ago," Belichick said.
That is a low bar to clear in some respects. Year 1 ended at 4-8 overall and 2-6 in the ACC, with roughly two-thirds of the roster wearing a different uniform the previous fall. Reports surfaced during the season of a divided locker room, alleged internal rule violations, and a toxic culture. Belichick and UNC issued a joint statement reaffirming his commitment and the athletics department's support.
What Is Different in 2026
Belichick has added 40 freshmen to the roster and brought in offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. The 2026 roster features 48 true or redshirt freshmen against just eight seniors, a deliberate youth-movement approach that runs counter to the transfer portal era most programs are leaning into.
The QB room includes Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr., Texas A&M transfer Miles O'Neill, freshman Travis Burgess, and returning sophomore Au'Tori Newkirk.
Belichick spoke about the physical improvement ahead of the National Championship Game, telling College GameDay: "We didn't really have a recruiting class last year, a lot of new players, 70 new players to start the season. This year we'll be in much better shape in terms of having some continuity and building forward through spring ball."
