Vita Vea, NT for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has requested a trade, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 31-year-old is under contract through 2026 but wants out after contract extension talks stalled.
Why Vea requested a trade
Vea signed a four-year, $73 million extension in January 2022. He is scheduled to receive up to $17 million in non-guaranteed money for the 2026 season, but his camp believes that figure falls well short of current market rates. Jordan Davis signed for roughly $24.25 million per year and Alim McNeill for roughly $26 million per year. Vea's camp reportedly wants $20 million to $25 million or more annually.
Vea skipped Buccaneers mandatory minicamp as a hold-in while seeking a new contract. Head coach Todd Bowles called the situation "not concerning" publicly. Now Vea has escalated by formally requesting a trade, per Schefter.
What this means for Tampa Bay's defense
Vea is the anchor of the Bucs' run defense. He is a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the best nose tackles in football. If he is traded or holds out into the season, Elijah Simmons would step into a larger role at defensive tackle. Tampa Bay's run defense without Vea would be significantly softer.
Fantasy impact: Vea trade request and opposing RBs
Vea himself has no fantasy value in standard formats. The real effect is on the Buccaneers' schedule opponents. Tampa Bay's run defense has been one of the better units in the NFL with Vea in the middle. Remove him, and running backs on the Bucs' schedule become more attractive starts.
