Former Saints LB Keith Mitchell Passes Away at 51
Former New Orleans Saints linebacker Keith Mitchell has died at age 51. Texas A&M athletics confirmed the news Thursday, with Mitchell's family describing his death as "sudden and unexpected." No cause of death has been disclosed.
NFL Career
Mitchell signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 1997 out of Texas A&M, where scouts had concerns about his lack of bulk and coverage ability. He proved those doubts wrong over five seasons in New Orleans, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2000. In 94 career NFL games, Mitchell totaled 408 tackles and 19.5 sacks.
After his time with the Saints, Mitchell joined the expansion Houston Texans in 2002 and then the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003. A spinal injury suffered during the 2003 season ended his career and left him paralyzed for roughly six months. Through medical treatment and what he described as conscious breathing and mindfulness work, Mitchell regained his ability to walk.
College Career
At Texas A&M from 1993 to 1996, Mitchell was a cornerstone of the "Wrecking Crew" defense. He earned All-SWC honors in 1995, an All-Big 12 selection in 1996, and All-American recognition that same year. He finished his college career ranked fourth all-time in sacks at A&M with 34, including 14.5 during his senior season. He was inducted into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.
Post-Career
Following his recovery, Mitchell transitioned into wellness and yoga work and authored a book called "The Mindfulness Method."
Note: Mitchell retired in 2003 and his passing carries no fantasy football lineup implications. This is purely a remembrance of a former Pro Bowl player and his legacy.
