Patriots owner Robert Kraft confirmed Saturday that New England has a record contract offer on the table for cornerback Christian Gonzalez (CB, New England Patriots). Speaking to reporters ahead of the team's first training camp practice, Kraft said: "We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person. That's why we've made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL." Kraft also said the contract would be the largest in Patriots franchise history.

The two sides have not reached an agreement. Head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the situation Friday: "He is here and I would expect him to participate. Those contract negotiations are ongoing. I'm excited about having Christian back here with us."
One complicating factor: Gonzalez's agent also represents Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who is also due for an extension. Running two high-profile negotiations at once has slowed progress on both.
The Patriots are not under pressure to close quickly. They already exercised Gonzalez's fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through 2028. He is set to earn $2.259 million this year and $18.11 million in 2027, and the team can apply the franchise tag for 2028 if no long-term contract gets done.
What the market looks like
The current benchmark at cornerback is Trent McDuffie, who signed a four-year, $124 million extension ($31 million per year, $100 million guaranteed) earlier this offseason after being traded from the Chiefs to the Rams. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated projects a fair contract for Gonzalez at around four years and $140 million, roughly $35 million per year.
Gonzalez, 24, was drafted 17th overall in 2023 out of Oregon. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound corner earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2025 and has been in the All-Pro conversation in each of the last two seasons. A poll of league executives, scouts, and coaches this offseason ranked him third among all cornerbacks, behind only Pat Surtain II and Derek Stingley Jr. He played a major role in the Patriots returning to the Super Bowl in his third season.

Gonzalez has no direct fantasy value in standard formats. He matters indirectly because he draws shadow coverage assignments against opposing WR1s. Before locking in a wide receiver facing New England, check whether Gonzalez is the likely matchup.
He is at training camp and participating, so there is no holdout to factor into the Patriots' defensive outlook heading into 2026.
