Cyrus Allen returns to Chiefs practice
Cyrus Allen, the Chiefs' rookie wide receiver, is back on the field after missing nearly a week with a shin bruise. He returned to practice Friday morning in full pads, per ChiefsDigest.com's Matt Derrick.
Allen, a 5th-round pick (176th overall) in the 2026 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati, suffered the injury August 1 when he and cornerback Kaiir Elam collided during a punt return drill. Tests ruled out a tear or broken bone, and he was listed as day-to-day from the start.
What he showed before the injury
Before going down, Allen had been one of the most talked-about players in camp. With Rashee Rice still rehabbing his knee and off the field, Allen emerged as Patrick Mahomes' go-to target. Pete Sweeney of The Kansas City Star reported he was "undoubtedly" Mahomes' favorite early in camp, and head coach Andy Reid said, "Cyrus had a good day today with him. I think Pat's got some trust there."
SI's Albert Breer wrote that Allen "might've been the best receiver in camp before bruising his shin," and the Chiefs see similarities between Allen and four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs based on his physical profile and play style.
What this means for the depth chart
Once Allen is back at full speed, he'll compete with Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Royals for the WR3/WR4 spots behind Rice and Xavier Worthy. That competition is genuinely open. Royals, a fourth-round pick from 2025, finished last season with two catches for four yards on 86 snaps. Thornton has never locked down a consistent role.
Allen also brings special teams value as a kick returner, which adds to his roster appeal.
For dynasty managers, Allen is worth a hard look right now. The injury is not a concern, the trust from Mahomes appears real, and the WR3 job in Kansas City is there for the taking. In redraft leagues, monitor how quickly he gets back into team drills, but the return to practice is the news you were waiting for.
