Patriots owner Robert Kraft said publicly that the team has already made Gonzalez an offer that would make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history and the highest-paid player in franchise history. Despite that, the two sides have not closed a deal.

Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf described the situation as having "nothing new" to report and said the team is "continuing to work with his representation to find a resolution that works for everyone."

Context on the cornerback market

Gonzalez is represented by agent Reggie Johnson, who recently negotiated a four-year, $132 million extension for Seattle Seahawks CB Devon Witherspoon that includes over $101 million guaranteed, making Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. That deal, reached Aug. 15, likely shapes what Gonzalez and his camp are targeting.

Neither side has set Week 1 as a hard deadline to reach an agreement.

Gonzalez is a cornerback, so his contract situation has no direct fantasy value. What matters is availability. He missed joint practices after landing hard in the end zone at training camp, though he did return to practice.
