Kyler Murray leads the Vikings QB competition through seven practices

Kyler Murray, QB, Minnesota Vikings, remains the heavy favorite to start Week 1 after seven training camp practices, ESPN's Kevin Seifert reported on August 4-5, 2026.

Murray signed a one-year, veteran-minimum contract with Minnesota in March 2026 after the Arizona Cardinals released him. The Cardinals still carry $36.8 million in dead cap on that move, so the Vikings got Murray at almost no cost.

J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in 2024, is the other competitor. McCarthy's biggest advantage is familiarity with the offense. Murray just joined this offseason and is still learning the playbook.

What the practices have actually looked like

The most important day so far was Day 7, a padded practice. McCarthy got first-team reps in the 7-on-7 period and connected on a corner route to Jeshaun Jones. Murray then took over in the full-team session and finished with the edge.

Day 5 was Murray's best practice. He was on the field for 16 of the first-team offense's 22 snaps in 11-on-11 drills and completed all three of his passes to Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings. Seifert noted Murray has shown standout vertical throws and quick chemistry with Jefferson throughout camp.

McCarthy had one rough stretch in a goal-line drill where he overthrew three consecutive passes. The crowd in Eagan was loud enough that McCarthy, head coach Kevin O'Connell, and Jefferson all turned to look. McCarthy rebounded in subsequent reps, and ESPN analyst Ben Solak, who attended one practice, said neither QB had a great day on the day he was there, though Murray still holds the edge overall.

O'Connell said reps would rotate between the two QBs, not necessarily 50/50 each day, but roughly even over time.

What this means for your roster

Murray is the one to target. He has Jefferson, Jordan Addison (WR, Minnesota Vikings), and a top-tier coaching staff around him. The comparison to Sam Darnold's 2024 prove-it season under O'Connell is reasonable: Murray is on a one-year deal and has every incentive to perform for a big contract next offseason.

On the injury side, Addison is dealing with a jammed thumb. He is not reported out, but his reduced reps have given second-year WR Tai Felton more work. Worth watching in camp reports.

McCarthy's fantasy value collapses if Murray wins the job. His only edge is pre-existing playbook knowledge, and that has not been enough through seven practices. Hold McCarthy only in dynasty leagues where his 2024 draft pedigree still has long-term upside.

Murray is a QB2 with upside in redraft and a player worth rostering in every two-QB league. If Jefferson stays healthy and Murray wins the starting job, the ceiling on this offense is real.
